Every ocean has its signature catch, and knowing it turns a boring anchorage wait or a Sunday off into dinner. This map marks the world's great fishing grounds with the species that made them famous.
Cold, nutrient-rich currents grow the biggest stocks: cod and haddock in the North Sea and Barents Sea, pollock and salmon in the Bering Sea, anchoveta off Peru where the Humboldt current wells up.
Warm waters mean tuna: yellowfin and bigeye across the tropical Indian Ocean, skipjack everywhere warm, bluefin running the Mediterranean. Reef edges add coral trout, grouper and mahi-mahi.
Two rules before you wet a line: check local seasons, quotas and marine reserves (many grounds are strictly managed), and never eat reef fish you cannot identify — ciguatera is real in the tropics.
Schematic — grounds move with seasons and currents; quotas and reserves differ per country. Check local rules before fishing.
